Music, friendship, and pizza – it doesn’t get much better than that! On March 12, 2016, the Maria Kaupas Center partnered with the St. Casimir Academy/Maria High School Alumnae Association to celebrate the Sisters of St. Casimir during National Catholic Schools Sisters Week. About fifty people, including MKC members, their families, alums, and MKC staff took a bus out to Franciscan Village in Lemont. Each Sister received a personal, handmade card from an MKC member thanking her for the Center. But the highlight of the day was the “Friendship” performance of the MKC’s Fun with Instruments class, 12 third grade singers and musicians under the direction of Maria alumna (and Alumnae Association president) Anna Belle O’Shea and Vicki Walters-Beach. The children demonstrated music principles, played a variety of percussion instruments, sang songs in different languages, and offered the Sisters a blessing and their friendship. An interactive performance got them off the stage and mingling with the audience, and it also got a few of the Sisters out of their seats to play “percussion-basketball.” Following the performance, everyone enjoyed a pizza lunch, generously provided by the Alumnae Association. The day was a delight for everyone: two of the children asked for time at the microphone to address the Sisters, thanking them for their respect and telling them they are very gentle. Sister Rosalinda said she was so excited about the day that she couldn’t sleep the night before, and she was still so excited that she doubted she would sleep that night, either!
